AIM[21]: El caso S99: El robo de la espada (8)

AIM[21]: Case S99: The Theft of the Sword (8)
JJ summarized the situation: the sword had vanished once again, and with it, Pedregal’s assistant—presumably kidnapped. But there was no use crying over spilled milk; as regrettable as the turn of events was, there was work to be done. Back in Chaotic City, upon arriving at my building—late as it was—I didn’t head to bed. Instead, I went into my office, brewed a pot of coffee, and sat down to rethink the entire investigation. I needed a new lead—one that would put me on the right path to finding the precious Damascus steel sword. If I could pick up the trail again, perhaps I’d also be in time to locate Fabiola Colmenarez. I didn’t know it yet, but the case of the stolen sword had taken a turn that would transform it into a new “S” case.

I finally got some rest just before dawn, setting my smartphone alarm for 9:00 AM to begin the hunt for a new lead. But I woke up much earlier; Mr. Goldstein called from his office shortly after 8:00. He wanted to see me—and demanded a detailed report on the case so far. I couldn’t exactly say no—he signs my paychecks—so I went to his office. My alarm went off the moment I sat down in front of him.

“Damn it, turn off that blasted alarm, Detective Suárez! Now, tell me—what happened with the sword? Do you have good news or bad news?”
“Bad!” I replied curtly.
I immediately gave him a brief summary of what had transpired—starting with my interview with the sword’s owner, Professor Pedregal, during which I uncovered his secret relationship with his assistant—the very woman who had stolen the sword.

Then, I explained how I tracked her to La Guaira—to the apartment of her friend, the engineer Maite Morantes, in the Brisas del Mar building—where the young woman had been hiding with the sword.

Unfortunately, I arrived in La Guaira a bit too late—the following night—though I neglected to mention that my delay was caused by a pair of corrupt detectives, Presidente and Oltio, and the two maneuvers I had to pull to throw them off my trail.

By the time I reached the Brisas del Mar building, Fabiola Colmenarez and the Damascus steel sword were already gone. The woman had allegedly been kidnapped by the very same individual: a tall, burly, and very well-dressed Black man!

“Damn it, Suárez! I was so close to getting it back—that’s why I hired you! You’re the best insurance detective in the city. Do you have any idea where this mysterious Black man—and the sword—might be? I really don’t want to have to sign that check for 2.7 million dollars.”
“I’ll do my absolute best, but I’ll be honest: I don’t have a single lead as to who this mysterious Black man might be or where he could be hiding. Still, don’t worry, Mr. Goldstein—I know exactly where to go looking for her.” It was past 10 in the morning when I left the luxurious building of the prestigious insurance firm, Goldstein. I was hungry—all I’d had for breakfast back at my apartment was a cup of coffee and a slice of toast with jam—but there were more pressing matters at hand. Mr. Goldstein couldn’t have cared less about the disappearance of Fabiola Colmenarez; after I told him what had happened—and my own involvement in it—he didn’t even mention her. His only priority was the sword he had insured. I, on the other hand, had my own priorities: the young woman’s life came first! And if I could recover the sword along with her, well, that would be even better.
In the early hours of the morning, I had analyzed the situation. Although there was a slight possibility that the Black man might have been an acquaintance or a romantic partner of Fabiola’s, my gut told me to trust her friend, the engineer Maite Morantes. Back at her apartment, while I was preparing tea, Maite shared a bit more about her history with Fabiola.

MM met Fabiola in high school in Puerto Cruz, and both later moved to the capital to pursue different degrees at different universities. For seven years—throughout their studies and even after graduation—they were roommates, until the engineer bought an apartment in La Guaira, while Fabiola remained in the capital. Even living apart, they remained best friends. Over those years, they had each met the other’s romantic partners and friends; the Black man—over 40, tall, and burly—did not fit into either of those circles. A man like that is not easily forgotten; Fabiola would have mentioned him or shown a photo. MM was certain that Fabiola had been kidnapped and that she did not know the man who took her—contrary to what Detective Carpio claimed at the La Guaira police station.

Assuming MM was telling the truth—since her primary goal was to find her friend, she had no reason to lie or withhold information—a question arose: how did this Black man end up in La Guaira, searching for the sword and taking Fabiola with him? The answer was simple: just as I was pursuing the sword, if he wasn’t hired by Goldstein or Professor Pedregal—the only other interested parties—it could only mean that this mysterious man had been after the sword all along. Perhaps he was another collector? Given his physical description, it is more likely that he was another detective, working for someone else—someone lurking in the shadows!

That seemed to make more sense: this mysterious man works for the true collector—the person who discovered Professor Pedregal’s find. How did he find out? In the same way the professor did: through the website of the pawn shop where the sword was located and subsequently purchased. At a single glance—judging by a photograph—he knew that if it were authentic, it would be worth a fortune. That was my next destination: the pawn shop where Pedregal had bought the sword. I was certain that the Black man had also gone to that same pawn shop to purchase it!

Heavy traffic in the chaotic capital city slowed me down, but I managed to reach the shopping center where the pawn shop was located just before noon. I introduced myself as an insurance investigator; the owner’s face tightened. When I tried to probe for the information I needed, he replied that his clients' information was confidential. I had to strike at his pride as a businessman.
“Well, since you won’t tell me how you acquired the sword—or who else, besides Professor Pedregal, came looking for it...”

“I’ll repeat it: it’s confidential—confidential information. I already told you; don’t keep pushing, Detective.”
“You know, when I interviewed Professor Pedregal, he confessed that he’d made a major purchase—he paid $125,000 for the sword.”
“I made an even better deal! The young man who sold it to me wanted $25,000, but I ended up buying it for $9,000.”
“Congratulations—you made thirteen times what you paid for it. Quite a deal.”
“The best one I’ve made in years, Detective.”
“Do you happen to know how much Pedregal paid to insure it?”
“They must have valued the sword at between $150,000 and $160,000—that’s the maximum price Pedregal told me he could get at an auction. Insurance premiums usually run between 12% and 15%, so he must have paid around $20,000, right?” Maximum $25,000
—You’re quite good with numbers—you almost got it right! You were only off by $380,000!
—What?
—Well, your friend Professor Pedregal paid $405,000 for the insurance policy; the sword was valued by the Goldstein insurance firm at $2.7 million!
—That wretch Pedregal deceived me! He told me the sword was forged, at most, about 200 years ago!
—According to what I read in the Goldstein insurance report, the sword is over 700 years old. It appears to be the twin of another; both swords belonged to an Arab prince!

—That miserable scoundrel Pedregal... what do you need to know, Detective?
