True or False?

@ethical.elder · 06.11.2026, 21:03

The Problem Is Not That Nothing Is Happening — You Are Just Too Comfortable Doing Nothing.

Let me start with a question that will offend some of you. But I need you to be honest with yourself for once.

QUICK CHECK-IN BEFORE YOU READ
TRUE or FALSE? Sometimes the problem isn't that nothing is happening around you. It's that you've become too comfortable doing nothing.

1. Let me be blunt with you.

We love to complain in this part of the world. And I get it. Nigeria is hard. Benin is hard. Lagos will drain your battery, your data, and your patience before 10am. You wake up, NEPA takes light, you are already tired before the day starts.

So we say it every day: "Nothing is happening. There is no opportunity here. I'm just managing."

But last weekend, I was in a room full of people. No big event. Just a small house gathering. Friends, drinks, gist, music low in the background. And I sat down and watched. Really watched.

[Image 1: A random evening. Two people actually talking. No filters.]

That's when this unpopular opinion dropped in my spirit. What if the problem is not that nothing is happening? What if life is actually happening all around you, every single day, but you've built a very comfortable house inside "doing nothing" and you now pay rent there?

"Doing nothing is not rest. It is a decision you make every day and then pretend you didn't make it."

2. The Comfort Trap — How 'I Dey Manage' Becomes Your Identity

Comfort is a very polite thief. It doesn't come with cutlass. It comes with logic.

It tells you, "Rest small, you've tried." You've scrolled for 3 hours, but you've tried. It tells you, "Tomorrow you will start." And tomorrow has been coming for 8 months.

You know how it starts? You miss one small opportunity to show up. A friend says, "Come to this small hangout, you will meet people." You say you are tired. Next week, someone says, "I need help with this small project, can you come?" You say you are not in the mood.

1000365293.jpg
[Image 2: This laughter? It didn't happen on WhatsApp status. Someone showed up.]

Before you know it, your default mode becomes "I'm inside." Your body is inside your room. Your mind is inside overthinking. Your potential is inside a folder you never open.

We confuse peace with avoidance. We think because we are not stressed, we are peaceful. No. Sometimes you are just numb. You have mastered the art of not trying, so you don't have to deal with the fear of failing.

3. Look Around You — Life Is Actually Happening

I want you to really look at these photos again. This was not a Davido concert. It was not a big-money event. It was normal people in a normal house.

1000365295.jpg
[Image 3: Group watching something, attentive and engaged together]

But see what was happening:

  • People were listening. Actually listening, not pressing phone.
  • People were laughing till their cheeks hurt.
  • Someone was learning how to hold a mic and address a crowd for the first time.
  • Two people were reconnecting after months of "we need to catch up".

[Image 4: Woman in striped top — Confidence is a skill. Not a gift.]

1000365297.jpg
[Image 5: Two women hugging — Real support still exists. But you have to be present.]

That girl in the striped top? She stood up to pose, to own her moment. She didn't wait till she had perfect body, perfect background, perfect life. She just stood up.

The two girls hugging? That hug could have saved someone from a very bad week. But it only happened because both of them came out.

My point is: Life is not waiting for you to be ready. Life is happening in small rooms, with small people, doing small things consistently. And those small things become your big break.

4. The Big Lie We Tell Ourselves

Let's address the lie directly. The lie is: "Nothing is happening in Benin / Nothing is happening in Lagos / Nothing is happening in Nigeria / Nothing is happening in my life."

That statement is not 100% true. It is a feeling, not a fact.

What is true is: "I have stopped looking for what is happening." "I have stopped showing up where things happen." "I have become comfortable explaining why I can't, instead of trying how I can."

1000365298.jpg
[Image 6: She came as she was. Colorful. Visible. No apologies.]

Think about it. When was the last time you entered a room you were not invited to, just because you wanted to learn? When was the last time you DM'd someone and said, "I love what you do, can I learn?" When was the last time you finished something you started?

If you cannot answer those questions, it is not that nothing is happening. It is that you have stopped moving towards the things that are happening.

5. Why We Get So Comfortable Doing Nothing

Let me not pretend I am better than you. I have been there. I know why we stay.

1. Fear disguised as wisdom. "If I don't try, I cannot fail." So you turn your fear into advice. You advise yourself to wait. To be careful. To be "realistic". But it is just fear wearing agbada.

2. Comparison. You see someone on Instagram blow up in 6 months. You have been trying for 2 years. So you think, "What's the point?" You forget that Instagram shows results, not process. You didn't see their 4 years of doing nothing and learning.

3. Waiting for a big break. We are all waiting for one big uncle, one big opportunity, one viral post. Meanwhile, your life will actually be built from 100 small uncomfortable conversations like the ones in these photos.

1000365299.jpg
[Image 7: Someone had to be uncomfortable enough to pick up the mic first.]

See that woman in red holding the mic? Trust me, her hand was shaking. But somebody has to be the one to speak first. Somebody has to break the awkward silence. Growth lives on the other side of that awkwardness.

6. What Doing Nothing Is Really Costing You

Let me calculate the cost for you, because we like to think doing nothing is free. It is not.

Doing nothing is costing you confidence. Every time you say you will do it tomorrow, your brain records: "I am not someone who keeps promises to myself."

It is costing you relationships. People stop inviting you because you always say no. Opportunities stop finding you because you are never where opportunities hang out.

It is costing you time — the one currency you cannot borrow, cannot earn back. You are not 25 forever. That idea you have had for 2 years? Someone else did it last month. Not because they are better, but because they were less comfortable.

1000365300.jpg
[Image 8: Joy takes effort too. She had to stand up to dance.]

See this last picture. She is dancing. Cup in hand. People watching. She could have sat down and said, "I'm shy." But she stood up. That small decision to stand up is what separates people who experience life from people who watch life on their phone.

7. How To Break Out — Start With Small Discomfort

I will not give you 10 steps. You will not do 10 steps. Let me give you 3 things you can do this week, in Benin, in Lagos, wherever you are.

One: Show up somewhere. This week, accept one invitation you would normally reject. Or create your own small gathering. It doesn't have to be loud. It just has to be real. Go with the intention to listen and connect, not to impress.

Two: Do one thing that scares you for 15 minutes daily. Post that video. Record that voice note. Write that business proposal. Send that DM. Not for 5 hours. Just 15 minutes. Discomfort is a muscle. Train it small.

Three: Audit your "doing nothing" routine. Write down what you actually do from 7pm to 11pm for 3 days. You will be shocked. You are not resting. You are scrolling to avoid thinking. Replace 1 hour of it with something that makes you slightly proud of yourself before you sleep.

A NOTE FROM ME TO YOU
You don't need to blow in one day. You just need to stop being comfortable with hiding. The world does not reward the most talented. It rewards the most consistent and the most visible. Be seen, even if your voice shakes.

8. So, TRUE or FALSE?

I'll ask you again, now that you have read everything.

Is it true that nothing is happening around you? Or have you just built a very comfortable, very quiet, very explainable life inside "doing nothing" and you now call it patience?

I am not here to judge you. I am here to tap your shoulder. Because someone tapped mine too.

Life is happening. In small living rooms in Benin. In noisy apartments in Yaba. In quiet DMs. In that course you have not finished. In that friend you have not called back. In that small business you have not posted about because you are waiting for perfect logo.

Stop waiting for life to become interesting. Make your life interesting by moving.

Your turn. Be honest in the comments. No forming. Type TRUE if this post confronted you. Type FALSE if you still think I am wrong, and tell me why.
