A Major Bug Was Fixed on the Blurt Nodes Today

What Happened

Today, we had five of the public RPC nodes go down because of a very old bug in the broadcast plugin.

Our friend @drakernoise has found the issue and has fixed it once and for all.

We should no longer have outages caused by this bug once everyone has upgraded their public node.

The main node rpc.blurt.com has been patched, so has @drakernoise's node rpc.drakernoise.com, and mine blurt-rpc.saboin.com.

The Bug

The bug that made the nodes crash on September 16, 2026 was caused by how beneficiary accounts are validated when broadcasting a comment_options operation. It would check while modifying the chain state, and if the transaction got rejected, it sometimes threw an error after the chain state had been modified, which caused an invalid chain state and caused the node to crash.

The fix was to move the validation to before the chain state got modified. That way, if the transaction is rejected, the node just returns an error to the frontend, and the chain doesn't get modified.

Upgrading Your Node

After @drakernoise issued the fix for this bug and also another bug that he found while he was fixing this one, I have created the new Docker images and uploaded a fresh presynced blockchain state.

Here's the procedure to follow if you are using my Docker images and you want to upgrade:

Pull the Docker image:

docker pull registry.gitlab.com/blurt/blurt/rpc:latest

Remove the blurtd Docker container:

docker rm -f blurtrpc

If you need to download the presynced blockchain because yours is broken, you can follow these procedures. If you're just upgrading your node and already have a good blockchain state, you can skip to the last step.

To download a fresh presynced blockchain state, navigate to your /blurtd folder and delete your current blockchain:

cd /var/lib/docker/volumes/blurtd/_data

rm -rf blockchain logs p2p

Then download the presynced blockchain file:

wget --show-progress -qO- https://blurt-chain.s3.nl-ams.scw.cloud/RPC-0.9.1-amd64-latest.tar.lz4 | lz4 -d | tar x

Once the blockchain is done downloading , or if you already have a good blockchain state, run this Docker command:

docker run -d --net=host --log-driver="local" -v blurtd:/blurtd --name blurtrpc registry.gitlab.com/blurt/blurt/rpc:latest
