There was a time when the legend of a romantic Spain took root in this place. Nineteenth-century travelers, influenced by Orientalism, would visit Granada and Córdoba, saving the city of Ronda, in Málaga, for the end of their journey. This city is situated on a sheer cliff, amid a breathtaking landscape of deep gorges through which the waters of the Guadalevín River flow—a river known to the Arabs as the “River of Milk.” The waterfall, shaped like a horse’s tail, divides the city into two parts.

AN ENGINEER AND THE CLIFF OF RONDA
Until the second half of the eighteenth century, the cliff of Ronda was a deep gash that divided the city. In 1793, engineer Juan Martínez de Aldehuela connected the old and new parts of the city with a magnificent stone structure, the Puente Nuevo.

Many prominent cultural figures have crossed this iconic bridge, including the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, the writer Ernest Hemingway, and the filmmaker Orson Welles. Welles, who was so fascinated by this region and the skill of his friend, the bullfighter Antonio Ordóñez, requested to be buried on the family estate located on the outskirts, amid fields and rolling hills.

TWO TOWNS TO VISIT
Ronda consists of two towns connected by a stone bridge. The newer part is home to a beautiful bullring, while the old town retains its romantic charm, with winding, sloping streets, majestic palaces, and legends that tell stories of noble bandits and passionate ladies. Against such a backdrop, romantic travelers were captivated.
