Changing Seasons, Changing Habits...

Fall came rushing in with some degree of certainty, overnight.

We went from having very calm and still sunny days, with that bit of haze that is typical for late summer because there are dust particles and remnants of distant forest fires hanging in the air...

... to this morning, there is a stiff cold breeze blowing across the yard and the wind chimes outside my Home Office window were clanging rather loudly.

I've always enjoyed the change of seasons because they somehow remind me of the passing of time in a non-stressful way — at least when you compare time passing to the stressful way of daily deadlines and needing to be at a doctor's apartment in another 15 minutes.

I'd like to think that changes of season also inspire me to change certain patterns in my daily doings, but it historically has not worked out as well as I might hope for.

In the past I have often said to myself things like "now that summer gardening season is over, I'm going to find more time for writing!" But, invariably, I seem to find more time for things that have nothing to do with writing.

Part of the joy of being self-employed and working from home is that my life doesn't really have a lot of structure. This works quite well in the sense that my ADHD is manageable, and boredom doesn't set in.

However, this lack of structure can also be a drawback sometimes because you end up sitting there, contemplating the many possibilities for what to do next, and instead of actually doing one of those things you just end up in endless analysis of what to do next.

Which is a long winded way of saying that the lack of structure is sometimes my enemy.

My inclination has always been to try to write first thing in the morning, because my brain is the least "polluted" at that time. When I use the word polluted, I mean that I haven't yet started processing and perhaps getting annoyed at the stuff of life that invariably ends up derailing me.

Of course, it is not officially fall for another three weeks. Which is also not a good thing... from a productivity perspective... because I might just end up saying "well, it's not really fall yet," and then just stick with the old routines.

So why change?

In most cases, change is brought about by the fact that we're either bored, or the old ways are not really working anymore. In my case, it is mostly the latter, thanks in large part to the sinking economy here in the USA, and in part due to the fact that a couple of my home businesses are slowly but inexorably becoming obsolete, getting replaced by changing tastes and by AI and automation.

I cling to the past because the prospect of having to reinvent myself again late in life feels rather daunting.

So, this will either end up as the preamble to a more concentrated effort to keep a blog... or as yet another "stub" that winds up leading nowhere.

Time will tell...

Thanks for stopping by!
