[26]: M’s Cave (Phase One: 3)
My Cousin, Micky Vare
Before diving into the inner workings of this significant "lair" from my past, I need to introduce my cousin Micky. Just as my friend La Noche’s apartment was my favorite hangout—my chosen lair—for various reasons, I can predict that if Micky ever decides to write his memoirs, "M’s apartment" would undoubtedly be revealed as his own favorite haunt.

Let’s start with a bit of background on one of my best friends; although we were first cousins by blood, life turned us into brothers. Micky was a child prodigy from the start: while I was struggling to learn the alphabet at age four, Micky already knew how to read. By the time I was a teenager and had developed the habit of reading—with Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude being the most complex book I’d tackled—Micky, despite being a year younger than me, was already reading Nietzsche, Kafka, and Dostoevsky, among others.
He possesses a gift for words and an extraordinary talent for debate. He would have made a brilliant lawyer had he followed in the footsteps of his father, "El Dragón" António. From him, Micky inherited that gift of gab and his storytelling ability, as well as his distinctive walk (a waddle like a duck’s) and his uncanny luck with the opposite sex—there is no denying the magnetic appeal he held for women. I remember when I was a child—ten or eleven years old—and the whole family would gather at Grandpa BDP’s house to celebrate the New Year. While Luisito, Hugo, Juanpa, Lily, Nuncia, my sister, and I played in the backyard, Micky—inside the living room—was capable of holding high-level debates with the adults: my aunts, parents, and uncles. Let me explain: this wasn't the typical interrogation adults subject a brilliant child to—the kind who seems to have all the answers. Micky conversed with them as an equal—or rather, debated them—on any topic: politics, international affairs, sports, and so on. It was incredible to watch and hear him speak at that age.

In 1999, when Micky was lost in his own personal maze and didn't know which direction to take his life, his father—"The Dragon" Antonio, a successful lawyer who had even served as a judge for a few years—offered him an offer he couldn't refuse. He would pay for Micky to study law at the same university where M was already studying here in Puerto La Cruz; Micky would work alongside him at the firm as an assistant—earning a salary and learning the trade while finishing his degree—with the added promise that, upon his father's retirement, he would inherit his shares as a partner in the firm. Interestingly, none of "The Dragon's" fourteen children followed in his footsteps as a lawyer. Micky—an inveterate bohemian averse to ties and commitments—turned the offer down. His father didn't give up and convinced him to visit a psychologist friend of his to take a psychometric test designed to determine which fields or careers would allow him to make the most of his abilities. Once the psychologist had the results, she met with both of them to go over the findings; however, the test didn't help much—in fact, as the saying goes, the cure was worse than the disease. According to the test, Micky could study or become literally anything he wanted—engineer, doctor, lawyer, writer, astronaut—provided he truly felt passionate about something.

Micky was born in April 1977 in Cumaná, the son of my Aunt Ele and "the Dragon" Antonio—born out of wedlock, as they never married. At that time, the law dictated that a child bear the mother's surname; as I recounted regarding "the curse of the BDP men," only my father and my Uncle Francisco adopted their father's surname (my grandfather BDP) upon reaching adulthood, while my aunts kept my grandmother Vare's surname—though my grandparents BDP and Vare did marry in order to adopt my Uncle Cesar. For this reason, Micky does not carry the BDP surname as I do.

In 1979, his younger brother JuanPa was born—also the Dragon's son. A year later, my Aunt Ele discovered that, alongside his relationship with her, Antonio was involved in another relationship and had two children with a woman here in Puerto La Cruz; she subsequently ended things with him. Micky and JuanPa grew up with an absent father whom they saw only two or three times a year, though he did provide financial support. When Micky turned 14 and won a poetry contest in his home state of Sucre, the Dragon Antonio tried to reconnect with his two sons—JuanPa was 12 at the time—and began showing up more often. However, the wounds caused by his absence remained raw; the Dragon offered them his surname, but both boys refused, choosing instead to keep their mother's. Nevertheless, from that point on, Micky did begin to gradually rebuild a relationship with his father—this was in 1991. That relationship progressed slowly and, I would say, solidified in 1999; sadly, JuanPa never wanted to walk that path with his dad.
I had to share this so people would understand why Micky and I don't share the same surname despite being first cousins—and looking to the future, because I established a very good relationship with "the Dragon." In a way, it also proves that it’s a small world and we are all interconnected by just six degrees of separation.
Let’s go back to 1994: M and Micky were best friends during their final year of high school. While M was passing the entrance exam for the Universidad Metropolitana, Micky was passing a much tougher test—the Galilei exam. This was a scholarship awarded directly by the Venezuelan state to enable young people to study at the world’s best universities. One of Micky’s teachers supported him, pulled some strings, and secured him a spot at the Sorbonne in Paris to study Literature; all that was missing was the scholarship itself, and Micky got it. There were four levels of the scholarship: the "full" award, which covered all tuition and living expenses; the "credit" option, which also covered everything but required you to repay the tuition to the Venezuelan state after graduating; and two other levels that offered the same terms but for study within the country. I can tell you that my sister—who is very intelligent—took that exam in 2000 hoping to go to the United States for postgraduate studies, but she only qualified for the credit option, so she didn't accept it. Micky won a full scholarship to study abroad, so he was set to leave for Paris in September of 1994.

But in the end, he got cold feet—those were his exact words; he told me so himself. He spent three weeks convincing his mom to sign the authorization for him to leave the country, since he was still a minor. My Aunt Ele didn't want to, but she eventually gave in. That was in July of '94; all that remained was graduation, getting his diploma, and gathering his transcripts to send the full application package to Caracas. That was when Micky realized he would be spending five years in France without seeing his mom, his brother, or his friends; without eating cazón (dogfish) empanadas, drinking rum, playing truco, or shooting pool at "Sol y Sombra" (he had his favorite bar, too); and, finally, without the beaches of his beloved Cumaná.
He stayed behind—a difficult decision that undoubtedly changed his life. In August, he went with Luisito and Hugo to work for Uncle Moncho in Bolívar State. They stayed with "La Roca" in the same house where I had stayed a year earlier. The "Golden Trio" had various adventures during those six weeks, but if I told them all, I’d never finish.

In late September, he went to Caracas to study; his scholarship was switched to the domestic version. He enrolled at UCAB—a rather expensive private university—to study Literature; it was the same university where my first girlfriend, Jota, was studying. M enrolled at the Metropolitana at the same time, and in October 1994, the adventures of M and Micky in the capital began.
