Wow, halfway through 2026, already!
I suppose the polite thing to say would be that it has definitely been a turbulent year, although I can't honestly think of very many positives in the course of that turbulence… so we're mostly really looking at a negative year, so far.
I have typically managed to navigate life by making the conscious choice to focus on the positives, while downplaying the negatives. And if all I have to talk about is the negative I have usually refrained from talking because we already live in a world of both conventional and social media that chases after every ambulance with the lights flashing, and every potential disaster.
Which leaves me with the realization that I really haven't written much because there is a limit to how much time you can give to simply bringing grateful for the fact that you're upright and breathing on your own!
Or is that just an exaggeration? Surely something has been good, right?
Well, let's see...
Our cats are healthy and they definitely provide some joy in an otherwise fairly dull daily routine. We're trying to grow some of our own food in our vegetable garden, but we have been somewhat foiled by the fact that the drainage flow from up the hill from us changed course and caused part of the garden to become a giant giant mud pie so all the plants rotted.
While the world of crypto has pretty much gone in the toilet — or so it seems — I suppose I should be grateful for the fact that at least I still have places where I can write blogs in a relatively free environment.
I have been trying to develop new ways to inject some energy into my home based businesses, and even though none of them have been particularly successful (yet) at least I'm grateful for the fact that there is still the hope that something will go better at some point. It is difficult though, when part of what you do (writing and editing) is increasingly being replaced by AI and my other business (of selling antique paper collectibles) is to a market that is dying out from old age.

I still enjoy working with my artwork and it provides a much needed creative outlet even if actually selling any of it is akin to paddling a canoe upstream against a strong current.
I try not to worry too much about the geopolitical situations and the greater world because they generally fit under the heading of "things I have no control over" and what's the point in worrying about things you have no control over? If the bombs start flying and that means the end of your life well that's just how that's gonna end up!
What I mostly find is that as the sensation that there is only gloom and doom around me closes in, my focal points become smaller and smaller and more and more local to me.
Sometimes I wonder if a lot of other people around the world are gradually disengaging from the mad circus of the oligarchs, because we are all little more then pawns in a giant chess games that we were not invited to participate in but nonetheless got swept up in.
Anyway, just wanted to check in here and "plant a flag" as it were, perhaps as a point of inspiration to resume a bit of writing.
